UPDATE 2/01/2024: State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced that Malcolm Carl Young, 47, of Forestville, Maryland, was sentenced to 60 years in prison with 30 years of active incarceration for a homicide that occurred on August 9, 2022, in Lexington Park, Maryland.
During the sentencing hearing, the State asked the Court to sentence Young to the maximum penalty of 60 years in prison: 40 years for second-degree murder, and 20 years for the firearm count, with both counts to run consecutive to each other.
The Defendant was convicted after a four-day jury trial and the Court sentenced him as follows:
Second-degree murder: 40 years in prison with 30 years of active incarceration; and Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony: 20 years of active incarceration to run concurrently with the second-degree murder sentence.
Senior Assistant State’s Attorneys Ashley Sowls and Jeffrey Maylor prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County.
Detective Warren Forinash of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator.
The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.
UPDATE 8/31/2023: A St. Mary’s County jury convicted Malcolm Carl Young, 47, of Forestville, Maryland, of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.
On August 9, 2022, at approximately 5:52 p.m., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Lex’s Laundromat on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies located victim Anthony Charles Wright, 53, in the parking lot to the rear of the business, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Mr. Wright succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.
Multiple witnesses on-scene identified the shooter as Malcolm Young and advised that he fled in the direction of St. Mary’s Square. Minutes later, officers located Mr. Young, who was then arrested.
The defendant faces a maximum sentence of up to sixty years in prison.
He will remain held without bond pending the sentencing hearing.
The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.
UPDATE 8/10/2022: Deputies arrived on scene within minutes of the shooting call and identified the suspect as Malcolm Carl Young, age 46 of Forestville.
Young was quickly taken into custody and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown and charged with the following in the death of Anthony Charles Wright, age 53 of Great Mills.

Young remains incarcerated at the detention center awaiting an appearance before the
District Court Commissioner.
UPDATE 8:30 P.M.; On August 9, 2022, at 5:52 p.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for the reported shooting.
Deputies arrived on scene and located a male victim, age 53 of Great Mills, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Lifesaving measures were attempted, and the victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Detectives and Crime Lab personnel from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

UPDATE: First Responders have cancelled Trooper 7. The victim was transported to an area hospital with CPR in progress.
Police have one person of interest in custody as of 6:15 p.m.
Sydney Drive in Lexington Park is closed for a police investigation related to this incident.

8/9/2022: On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at approximately 5:54 p.m., police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the area of the 21636 Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for the reported shooting victim.
Crews arrived on the scene and located one victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7 has been requested to land nearby for the victim who life-threatening serious injuries.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Criminal Investigations Division is on the scene investigating the assault.
