Charles County Detectives Arrest 18-Year-Old Waldorf Teen for Shooting of 13-Year Old in July of 2022, Police Recover Two Firearms

On July 18, 2022, at 11:52 p.m., officers from the La Plata Police Department and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 300 block of Jennie Run Drive in La Plata for the report of a shooting.

The initial investigation revealed the victim was standing in the area of Caroline Drive when an unknown suspect(s) started shooting.

One of the rounds struck the victim in the forearm. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Through investigation, detectives identified a suspect. They served search warrants and recovered two polymer “ghost” guns –meaning they did not have a serial number –and an AR style firearm.

Daniel George Montgomery, 18, of Waldorf, was arrested on September 16 and charged with the following below.

  • ASSAULT FIRST DEGREE
  • ASSAULT SECOND DEGREE
  • FIREARM USE/FEL-VIOL CRIME
  • RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT
  • HANDGUN ON PERSON
  • LOADED HANDGUN ON PERSON

On September 19, 2022, a judge ordered Montgomery be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. He remains without bond as of 9/21/2022 11:00 a.m. Montgomery has a preliminary hearing on October 14, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., at the Charles County District Courthouse.

UPDATE – Charles County Sheriff’s Office Press Release: On July 18, 2022, at 11:53 p.m., officers from the La Plata Police Department and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Caroline Drive and Jennie Run Drive in La Plata for the report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they located a 13-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the arm. The victim was transported to a hospital where he was admitted with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators are working to establish a motive and are pursuing leads to identify the person or persons responsible.

7/19/22: On Monday, July 18, 2022, at approximately 11:55 p.m., police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the area of Jennie Run Drive and Caroline Drive in La Plata, for the reported gunshot victim.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and requested a helicopter for a 13-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the wrist.

Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 2 landed nearby and transported the victim to an area trauma center.

Charles County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the victim was outside with a group of friends when the suspect fired several shots, the victim is expected to be ok.
