“Captain” William (Buck) Rogers Jr. embarked on his final voyage on October 21st, 2022, and passed away peacefully at his home in Solomons Island, MD. “Give me your tired, your poor; your huddled masses yearning to breathe free; the wretched refuse of your teeming shore; send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.” Matthew 11:28-30
This defines Buck Rogers. Larger than life in both stature and personality, Buck welcomed all into his heart and home, and filled every room with love and laughter (and perfectly grilled meat). Cherished for his ability to brighten any day — whether a powerful bear hug or an off-kilter joke — Buck knew exactly
how to bring love and light to anyone who crossed his path.
His happiest moments were spent on the water, with close family and friends, listening to Creedence Clear Water Revival, luring in the largest rockfish the Chesapeake Bay could offer. When the fish were not cooperating, you could find him and his family enjoying the beautiful sunset from the porch. Born on July 25th, 1941, Buck spent his childhood in Charleston West Virginia where he enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, and with family in Sutton, WV. Buck played both basketball and football for Charleston High School, and attended the University of Virginia where he played Center for the Cavalier basketball team. He eventually transferred to West Virginia University, where he graduated with a degree in engineering and was the proud Mountaineer mascot in 1963. Buck had a long and successful career in Information Technology, and was a lifelong advocate for conservation of the Chesapeake Bay. Buck is survived by his daughter Brooke Rogers (Robert) of Leesburg, VA, his son, William “Erik” Rogers (Ashley) of Weaverville, NC, his grandson Hunter Marshall Ware, mother of his children, Barbara J. Rogers of Leesburg, VA, his partner, Beverly Shultz of Kilmarnock, VA, and many beloved Hyer family members and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Mary Rogers, and his beloved sister Robinn. There will be a celebration of life for family and friends:
