Mary “Louise” Shafer, 93 of California, MD passed on February 22, 2023 at her home.
She was born on December 28, 1929 in Ridge, MD to the late William Henry Trossbach and Mary Alice McKay.
Louise was an accomplished quilter and avid gardener throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling and sailing the local waterways with her beloved children, Barton, Gail, Rea, Margaret, Paul and Will.
Louise was a devout Catholic who spent many hours volunteering her time to the needs of her community. She took great joy in simple pleasures, such as bird watching, reading and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Gail Ewell of California, MD and granddaughters, Adrienne Casteen (Mike) and Kimberley Ewell; Montgomery Rea Shafer (Jane) of Mechanicsville, MD and granddaughters, Allison Gross (Daniel) and Emily Havenstein (Jeff); Margaret Beck (Dan) of Magnolia, DE, and grandsons Christopher Spalding (Kelly) and Joshua Spalding (Jennifer); Paul David Shafer of Dameron, MD, and William Henry Shafer (Pam) of Lakewood, CO and granddaughter, Hali Shafer. She is also survived by her siblings: June Camioni, Vera Rucker, Bo Trossbach, Joan Hardy (Sid), Leroy Trossbach (Jo Ellen), and Kay Peel (Bill). In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by her son, Barton Shafer, her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Shafer, and her son-in-law, Thomas Ewell and her siblings: Charles Donald “CD” Trossbach, Ruth Unkle and Helena Pepher.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Marco Schad on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 22375 Three Notch Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653. Interment will be private.
