Charles Irving Knott, 80, of Valley Lee, MD passed away on October 18, 2023 at Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway, MD with his family at his side.
He was born on October 9, 1943 in Leonardtown, Maryland to the late James Harvey Knott Sr. and Donnie Marie Slade Knott.
Charlie was a lifelong resident of Valley Lee, MD. Growing up he worked alongside his brothers cutting tobacco, helping out around the fire house and any other job that required the “Knott boy’s” brawn.
Charlie worked for Stewart Transportation on the tug boat, transporting heating oil and fuel up the east coast. He was part of the Operating Engineers Local 77 in Washington, D.C. and worked on the building of the DC Metro Station and the Key Bridge. Later he owned C.I. Knott Excavating and Light Hauling where he would clear land, pour footers, move buildings and any other job that required hard work for a fair price. He also enjoyed jobs that let him weld and be outside. He enjoyed working with steel. If you had a piece of steel and needed something made from it, he was your guy.
He worked various jobs over the span of his life but one of his biggest joys was going out to catch crabs and oysters. Then, of course, he loved to steam up his bounty and sit under a tree and eat with family and friends and have a cold beer.
Charlie also enjoyed working in the garden with his brothers, where he grew way too many zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, string beans and other vegetables for his family to use. Everyone was welcome to his garden; he encouraged people to come and help themselves and to pick as much as they wanted. He loved going to cookouts with friends and family. Family meant everything to him. Laughter and food with his brothers was always a good time.
He is survived by Sandra L. Knott of Valley Lee, MD; his daughter, Kimberley Caswell (John) of Leonardtown, MD; his granddaughter, Valerie Caswell of Mechanicsville, MD; his step-grandchildren: Christina Gregoric, Cody Caswell and Catherine Caswell of Ohio and his brother Thomas Frederick ”Freddie” Knott of Valley Lee, MD.
He is preceded in death by his siblings: James Harvey Knott Jr, John Gonzie Knott, Joseph Earl Knott, Arthy Guetter, Lucy Perkins and Mary Lucille Ulry.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with prayers at 7:00 p.m., celebrated by Rev. Joe Orlando at Brinsfield Field Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Joe Orlando at St. George Episcopal Cemetery, 19167 Poplar Hill Lane, Valley Lee, MD 20692.
Pallbearers will be Mike Norris, Owen Norris, Connor Ford, Matt Bowes Sr, Steve Guy, Shelly Russell.
