Chesapeake Beach Man Arrested After Pointing Gun at Victim and Threatening Them at American Legion

A deputy from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Chesapeake Beach, for a reported assault.

Upon arrival, they were met by a 39-year-old female and a 38-year-old male who stated that they were at the American Legion on Chesapeake Beach Road in Chesapeake Beach on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

The female stated that her ex-boyfriend, identified as John William Dorsey, 39, of Chesapeake Beach, was also there and was intoxicated.

She stated that Dorsey had shown a firearm to her earlier in the evening and that Dorsey did not have any intention to harm her but wanted to show her that he had his concealed carry permit. She stated that Dorsey showed her a black in color handgun that was concealed in his waistband.

The male victim stated that he was talking with Dorsey during the night, and there were no altercations or signs that Dorsey was upset with him, but when he went outside with Dorsey to speak at one point in the evening.

The victim stated that Dorsey, without provocation, displayed a handgun and placed the muzzle of the handgun against his shoulder, and made a statement to the effect that if you hurt her (referring to the female), I will blow a hole through you. The victim described the handgun as a 9 mm and black in color and told police that he was in fear of what Dorsey would do.

The female showed police the following text messages dated 3/25/2024 at 8:17 a.m. between Dorsey and her:

  • Dorsey- OK so I am really sorry for yesterday. Tell (redacted victim name) I’m sorry!!
  • Female- John tbh I think you’re in enough trouble at the legion for what you did.
  • Dorsey- I’m not coming back, it was the wrong scare tactic, he loves you

Police went to The American Legion and reviewed surveillance camera footage from the night the incident occurred.

Police met with Dorsey in person, and he stated that he was drunk and pointed his gun at the victim’s shoulder. Dorsey said he made a statement similar to “I would blow a hole through him”.

Dorsey told police that the firearm used in the offense was in the glove box of his vehicle, and consented to a search of the vehicle. A black and grey colored Glock 43, 9mm caliber handgun was recovered from the glove box

Dorsey was placed under arrest for first-degree assault.
