The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is implementing a statewide ban on open air burning, effective November 1st 2024, in all Maryland counties.
The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) currently lists Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s County as D0 – Abnormally Dry with Short-term dryness slowing planting, growth of crops, Some lingering water deficits, and Pastures or crops not fully recovered.
On Monday, October 21, 2024, at 5:52 p.m., firefighters from Bay District were dispatched to 45000 block of Nancy Lane in Great Mills, for the reported brush fire.
Brush 9 from Bay District Volunteer Fire Department responded with two personnel and found a 25×25 fire involving a shed and threatening a garage.
A large brush fire was dispatched, however, due to multiple incidents throughout the entire county, firefighters from Bay District, Solomons, NAS Patuxent River, and Second District were dispatched to respond to the scene.
Crews contained the fire from spreading and deemed it under control with 15 minutes.
At 6:14 p.m., while firefighters from Solomons and NAS Patuxent River were responding to Nancy Lane, firefighters were diverted to the 45000 block of Daugherty Court in California. The 911 caller reported smoke in the area with kids reporting a tree smoking in the woods.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a 10×10 brush fire in the woods behind a house.
Police were contacted, however, it is unknown if the fires are under investigation.
On Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 10:13 a.m., firefighters from Bay District and Second District were dispatched to the 45000 block of Nancy Lane in Great Mills, for the reported large brush fire.
911 callers reported a fire in the backyard threatening a shed.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a 20×20 fire involving trees, grass and the remnants of the previous fire.
On Monday, October 28, 2024, at 10:50 a.m., firefighters responded to the 22100 block of Pegg Road and Donaldson Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported woods fire.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a large woods fire approximately 100×100 in size, and requested a large brush fire assignment which alerted additional firefighters from Bay District, Hollywood, and Second District.
Crews responded with Engine 31, Brush 3, Brush 9, and Engine 93. Firefighters contained the fire within 15 minutes and operated on the scene for approximately one hour.
No injuries have been reported in any of the fires.
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at approximately 10:40 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 22000 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park for a smoke investigation.
Firefighters arrived in the area to find a large column of smoke in the area of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and upon further investigation, crews located a large brush fire in the wooded area of the church cemetery.
Firefighters from Bay District and Hollywood responded with Brush 9, Engine 92, Tanker 74 and extinguished the fire within 20 minutes.
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at approximately 1:07 p.m., firefighters from Calvert and St. Mary’s County responded to the 300 block of Overlook Drive in Lusby, for the reported outside fire threatening a residence.
Crews arrived on the scene to find a brush fire and held the incident with units and personnel from Solomons, Bay District and extinguished the fire in under 20 minutes.
On November 2nd, 2024, at 11:25 a.m., firefighters from Bay District responded to the 21000 block of Peters Court in California, for the reported brush fire in a backyard.
Crews arrived on the scene to find a large brush fire near a residence and requested additional brush trucks which alerted firefighters from Bay District and Leonardtown.
Crews extinguished the fire within 25 minutes.
No injuries were reported.
