Labrons Edward Butler, 50, of Nanjemoy, is facing 42 charges, including multiple counts of animal cruelty and failure to provide proper care, following an investigation into the condition of several puppies found in Bryans Road.
According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident on March 10, 2026, behind a Food Lion on Marshall Hall Road in Bryans Road. A concerned citizen contacted the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to report puppies “in a small crate together with no food or water and sitting in their own feces.”
Animal Control Officer D. Murphy responded to the scene at approximately 9:20 p.m. and located the puppies in a wooded area. Authorities reported the animals were inside a wire crate that was not appropriate for their size and were “covered in feces and appeared to be malnourished and skinny with ribs and hips highly visible.”
Court documents state Butler was present at the scene when officers arrived. When questioned, Butler told the officer the puppies were “about 8-9 weeks old” and said he had received them from “a friend’s girlfriend, since his friend is incarcerated, on Sunday March 8, 2026.”
When asked about the location of the puppies’ mother, Butler stated she was “somewhere in Virginia.” He also told the officer that his plan for the puppies was “to sell them.”
According to the charging documents, Butler further told authorities he could “call [his] friend and take the puppies to the friend’s house to stay in their basement.”
Investigators allege the puppies did not have access to food, water, shelter, or adequate space, and had not received veterinary care. The officer noted that when Butler was advised the animals needed medical attention, “Mr. Butler did not want to voluntarily surrender the puppies.”
All of the puppies were seized by animal control and transported for emergency veterinary evaluation. Authorities assigned identification profiles to each of the animals and documented their condition as part of the investigation.
The charges include six counts alleging Butler deprived the animals of necessary sustenance, along with 36 additional counts alleging he failed to provide adequate food, water, veterinary care, shelter, space, and protection from weather conditions.
Following his arrest on March 14, 2026, Butler was initially held without bond. A court commissioner determined there was a “reasonable likelihood Defendant poses a danger to the safety of the alleged victim, another persons, or community.”
During a bail review hearing on March 16, 2026, Judge Sally C. Chester ordered Butler released on his own recognizance under conditions that he not engage in criminal activity and appear for all scheduled court proceedings.
A court date for the case is scheduled for April 28, 2026, in the District Court for Charles County.
