Anthony Lionel Wills, 43, of Upper Marlboro
Anthony Lionel Wills, 43, of Upper Marlboro, is facing multiple charges including illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, handgun in a vehicle, resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, attempting to elude police, driving without a license, and several traffic violations following an incident in La Plata, according to court documents.
The charges stem from an early morning incident on March 28, 2026, when officers observed a black sedan traveling on Rosewick Road in La Plata. According to charging documents, police noted the vehicle was “extremely close to the vehicle in front of it and was not following from a safe distance,” with the roadway described as wet from prior rain.
An officer initiated a traffic stop near Washington Avenue and North La Plata Court. Authorities state the vehicle initially stopped, but as the officer exited their patrol car, “the Chrysler took off at an extremely high rate of speed down Washington Avenue spinning tires.”
Police reported losing sight of the vehicle briefly before locating it minutes later parked at the end of a lot on Kent Avenue in La Plata. Officers determined the driver had fled on foot. While approaching the vehicle, officers reported seeing “a black in color handgun and magazine in bag on the back seat,” which was “stuffed in pair of Jordan shoes.”
Authorities also noted an open alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle, stating they “observed an open Coors Light beer in the front cupholder that appeared to be fresh.”
A K-9 search was conducted in the area with assistance from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Officers followed fresh footprints in wet grass leading behind nearby apartments. According to the report, a suspect was located hiding in a stairwell area. Police stated the individual “was attempting to conceal his body behind the small brick cutout and was hiding his hands in an attempt not to be seen by Officers.”
Officers gave verbal commands, and after initial resistance, the individual was taken into custody and identified as Wills. Police noted that Wills had “very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and had very red bloodshot watery eyes.”
While in custody, Wills made statements to officials, reportedly saying, “Just getting started” and “I had Coors but wasn’t able to finish it.”
Authorities also determined that Wills was prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and formally charged.
According to court records, Wills was ordered held without bond following his initial appearance. The court determined there was a “reasonable likelihood” he posed a danger to others or the community.
