Firefighters and Bystanders Save Wrong-Way Driver from Burning Vehicle in California

April 1, 2026

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 5:13 p.m., Bay District VFD Fire Chief Turner came across a serious motor vehicle collision with a vehicle on fire with the operator still inside the vehicle.

A serious motor vehicle collision with fire and entrapment was dispatched, which alerted crews from Bay District Stations 3 and 9 to the scene.

Prior to the arrival of other First Responders, Fire Chief Turner utilized his command vehicles fire extinguisher, while another Naval District Washington/Ridge VFD Firefighter removed the victim from the vehicle with the assistance from other bystanders.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a two vehicle collision and confirmed one vehicle was off the roadway and fully engulfed in flames with all occupants out.

EMS consulted for the patient to be flown to an area trauma center, however, due to weather, Aviation was denied. EMS transported the single patient by ambulance to an area trauma center.

The occupants of the second vehicle signed care refusal forms on the scene.

Police are investigating the motor vehicle collision, however, multiple witnesses reported the Nissan sedan was travelling Northbound in the Southbound lanes at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.

The collision sent the Nissan into a spin where it left the Southbound lanes of the roadway and struck a metal pedestrian crossing sign, a fire hydrant and came to a rest in the ditch. The collision ruptured the Nissan’s fuel tank resulting in a fast spreading fire.

Dashcam video showed the Nissan sedan had been travelling in the wrong-way for over half a mile.
