Kwasi N. Agyeman, 37, of Great Mills
Kwasi N. Agyeman, 37, of Great Mills, has been charged with second-degree assault involving a correctional employee following an incident at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, according to court documents.
Agyeman faces one misdemeanor charge of second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee, stemming from an incident reported on March 18, 2026.
According to charging documents filed by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at the detention center on Baldridge Street in Leonardtown. Authorities allege that Agyeman had been transported to the facility for an unrelated matter and became “highly aggravated” upon arrival. Court records state he was “verbally combative and resisted” officers attempting to conduct a required search before processing.
Due to his behavior, officers escorted him to a holding cell to complete the search. As officers began to exit the cell, Agyeman allegedly moved quickly toward a correctional officer victim and “aggressively pushing him through the cell’s doorway,” according to the statement of probable cause.
Documents state the officer subdued Agyeman and assisted him onto a bunk, during which “their heads ultimately collided,” resulting in a “significant injury to the victim’s left eyebrow.” The defendant was then restrained with the assistance of additional correctional staff.
Authorities noted the incident was reviewed using the facility’s camera system, and due to Agyeman’s continued combative behavior, no interview was conducted at the time.
Agyeman was formally charged under Maryland law for assault involving a correctional employee. If convicted, the charge carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years in jail and/or a $2,500 fine.
Following his arrest, Agyeman appeared before District Court Commissioner, Tina Jenkins on March 19, 2026. He was released on a $1,500 unsecured personal bond with conditions that he obey all laws, appear for scheduled court proceedings, and not have any contact with the correctional officer victim.
Court records indicate Agyeman waived his right to an attorney during the initial appearance but later qualified for representation by the Public Defender’s Office.
A court date is scheduled for April 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s District Court.
