Butterfly Effect Project Launched in Southern Maryland With Goals for Mental Health and Wellness Programs

April 24, 2026

The Butterfly Effect Project, Inc. (The BEP) has launched in Southern Maryland. This new non-profit provides an innovative approach to meet the need for wellness services in the community. The BEP aims to provide mental health and related services to those who face financial barriers.

To achieve this goal, The BEP has partnered with trusted, local providers of mental health services and wellness programs. These partners will accept eligible persons who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing financial hardship. In addition to mental health treatment, the spectrum of services offered includes nutrition services, trauma informed yoga, and fitness guidance.

According to testimony presented to the Maryland General Assembly, one in three Marylanders who need mental health treatment do not receive it because they can’t afford it. These unmet needs affect us all.

Founder Jennifer Voorhaar, LCSW-C, has been a provider of mental health and wellness services in St. Mary’s County for many years. “Our community currently has no way to provide no-cost services for people with mental health and wellness needs,” Voorhaar noted. “We have created something to fill that gap.”

The BEP has initiated fundraising efforts in Southern Maryland and will hold its first annual Flutter Fest 5K Wellness Walk and Fun Run on October 4, 2026, at Baggett Park in Laurel Grove, Maryland. Registration details will be released in May through the Project’s website at thebutterflyeffectprojectinc.com.
