Joshua Costa, 42, of Union Bridge, is facing a theft charge after an alleged incident at a Home Depot store in Charles County on April 7, 2026.

According to court documents, Costa is charged with theft of property valued between $100 and under $1,500. The charge stems from an incident reported by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records state that on April 7, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Costa entered a Home Depot store on Jefferson Farm Place in Charles County and “filled shopping cart with items.” According to the statement of probable cause, he then “went to the return area and returned the property he just put into the cart for cash.”

Authorities allege Costa received “$761.09 of store credit” and left the store with “$273.78 of un returned stolen property,” bringing the total value of the alleged theft to $1,034.87.

The document further states that Costa was stopped in the parking lot by a loss prevention officer, and was subsequently identified using a U.S. passport. “The defendant was taken back into the store and the property was returned to the victim,” the report states.

An officer with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office then arrested Costa and transported him to the Charles County Detention Center.

Costa was later released on his own recognizance following an initial appearance on April 7, 2026.
