Rayvell Garrett Thomas, 28, of Raeford, North Carolina, is facing misdemeanor charges in Charles County after deputies alleged a loaded handgun was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop on Indian Head Highway on May 6, 2026.
According to court documents, Thomas is charged with handgun in vehicle and loaded handgun in vehicle. A related traffic citation also accuses him of driving 116 mph in a posted 50 mph zone, with a payable fine of $530.
The charging documents state that at about 1:36 a.m. on May 6, 2026, a Charles County Sheriff’s Office officer was traveling north on Indian Head Highway near Chapmans Landing Road in Indian Head when he saw a gray passenger car allegedly traveling south at a high rate of speed. The officer reported confirming by agency-issued radar that the vehicle was traveling 116 mph in a 50 mph zone.
Another officer, PFC Boyle, conducted the traffic stop after being notified. The vehicle, described as a gray 2013 Audi S5 with Florida registration, stopped at a Dash In on Indian Head Highway in Indian Head.
Court documents say PFC Boyle explained the reason for the stop to Thomas, who was identified by his Florida driver’s license. Thomas allegedly told officers that “he did not realize he was going that fast” while reaching for his driver’s license and registration.
According to the statement of probable cause, Thomas opened the glovebox to get the registration, pulled his hand back and informed officers that he “had a handgun in his glovebox.” Thomas also allegedly stated that he “did not possess Maryland carry permit.” The officer reported removing a Glock 43 handgun from the vehicle.
Thomas was arrested without incident, according to the court filing. The officer wrote that a search of the vehicle did not locate any other evidence, and Thomas was transported to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
At an initial appearance on May 6, 2026, Thomas appeared without an attorney and waived an attorney for that proceeding, according to court records. A judicial officer ordered him released on a $2,500 unsecured personal bond, with conditions that he not engage in criminal conduct and appear in court when notified.
Court records show the bond was posted on May 6, 2026.
