May 19, 2026

Mary Helena Springstead, 73, of Chaptico, MD, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, with her loving family at her side.

Mary was born on July 9, 1952 in Baltimore, MD to the late James Motley Clark, Sr. and Charlotte Elizabeth (nee: Smith) Clark.

Mary was an amazing and loving mom, mommom and great mommom. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandkids and great grandbabies playing mommom monster. She always put others first and there was never anything Mary wouldn’t do for you if you asked. She had a great personality, and there was never a dull moment when she was around. In her younger years she was a softball pitcher; she later enjoyed coaching her son’s t-ball and baseball teams. When her son joined the high school marching band, she became an active member (Band Mom) of the Chopticon High School band boosters.  Mary was always active in the community. She was a member of the Lexington Park International Lions Club, the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, and also volunteered and supported numerous other community organizations. She was a dedicated and valued insurance agent with State Farm Insurance Company for almost 40 years before her retirement in 2021.

Mary is survived by her children: Michael Stephen Springstead, Jr. (Melanie) now living in Dallas, TX, Michele Stephanie McCurry of Morgantown, NC, and Mindy Marie Springstead of Chaptico, MD; grandchildren: William “Billy” Stivers V (Amanda), Sabrina Duvall (Ryan), Michael Springstead (Jessica); MaKenzie Knott; Liam McCurry; MaKylah Knott; Caleb Springstead; Canaan McCurry; and Jonas Springstead; great-grandchildren: Benjiman Stivers, Adelyn Stivers, and Abel Duvall; brother, Will Middleton(Penny); and best friends whom she loved as sisters: Rose Bietzell, Dana Davis, Ethel Smith, Phyllis Warman, and Sue Blackwell.

In addition to her beloved parents, she is also preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence Clark (infant), Charles Clark, and James Clark; and her niece, Melissa Middleton.
