Police Investigating Fatal Drowning in Welcome

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at approximately 8:15 p.m., police, firefighters, emergency medical services and dive teams responded to the Port Tobacco River in Welcome, for the reported missing person in the water.

911 callers reported a 40-year-old female was last seen in the water with her location currently unknown.

Crews arrived on the scene to confirm the victims clothing description, with witnesses reported she was last heard attempting to swim to a boat.

DNR, Charles County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters deployed rescue boats, drones, and dive teams to search for the missing woman.

Less than 25 minutes from the 911 calls, officers located, and removed the victim from the water where they began performing life-saving attempts.

Sadly, the victim was pronounced deceased on the scene by EMS a short time later.

The Department of Natural Resources Police, and Charles County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
