Darien Marquell Chase, 28, of Saint Leonard, has been charged with second-degree assault after Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported domestic incident on Garrison Street in Saint Leonard on May 20, 2026, according to District Court of Maryland records.

Court documents state that Cpl. R. Shrawder responded at about 8:32 p.m. after a 9-year-old boy called to report that his mother was injured and having trouble breathing. When deputies arrived, Chase was outside the home while another deputy went inside to check on an adult female victim.

According to charging documents, Chase told deputies that the adult female victim “was drunk and assaulted him by pulling his dreads, breaking his glasses, and hitting him.” The officer wrote that Chase had no visible signs of injury. Chase also showed a video that, according to the officer, appeared to show the adult female victim grabbing one of their sons from a couch and then lunging at Chase before the video cut out. Chase also stated that the adult female victim “is always drunk and has mental health issues,” according to the filing.

The documents state that EMS evaluated the adult female victim inside the home. An officer reported seeing blood on her face and described her as visibly upset. According to the charging papers, another deputy said the adult female victim reported that Chase “punched her in the face” and that this caused a gash on her head.

Court records also describe statements from juveniles who were at the home. According to the documents, the juveniles said the adult female victim told the children to go downstairs and go to bed, while Chase told them they could stay upstairs and watch a movie with him. The juveniles said the adult female victim became upset, tried to pull one child downstairs, saw Chase recording, and lunged at him. The juveniles also stated that she jumped on Chase, pulled his dreads, knocked off his glasses, and punched him in the face. The records say the juveniles were unsure how the adult female victim received the gash on her head after they went outside.

Chase was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with second-degree assault. The charging document states that the adult female victim would be charged through a separate application for charges for her alleged role in the incident. The officer also noted that Handle with Care notifications were completed and that Child Protective Services was contacted after deputies observed concerns inside the home, including no kitchen sink, live mice on sticky traps, bugs in the kitchen, and other sanitary issues.

The case remains open. Chase was released on his own recognizance on May 21, 2026, with conditions that he not engage in criminal activity, appear in court, and have “no hostile contact” with the adult female victim, according to the initial appearance paperwork. Chase also waived an attorney for the initial appearance only, court records show.
