June 8, 2026

UPDATE 6/8/2026: Charging Documents Added: Judge James Tanavage released Deshawn Anthony Carey on his own recognizance.

Deshawn Anthony Carey, 18, of Lexington Park, has been charged with theft of $25,000 to under $100,000, theft of $1,500 to under $25,000, motor vehicle unlawful taking, four counts of theft of $100 to under $1,500, two counts of theft less than $100, stealing another person’s credit card, and malicious destruction of property valued at $1,000 or more after authorities say a stolen Ford Bronco Sport was tracked from Lexington Park and later involved in a pursuit through St. Mary’s County.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on June 6, 2026, to Hilton Drive in Lexington Park for a reported vehicle theft.

An adult male victim reported that his 2025 black Ford Bronco Sport had been taken from the parking area outside his apartment and that he was actively tracking it through an app.

The victim told investigators he had purchased the vehicle about three weeks earlier for approximately $40,000. He said he returned from the store at about 8:30 a.m., parked the vehicle directly in front of his apartment, and went inside. Around 12:15 p.m., he noticed the vehicle was missing, though he said it may have been gone for hours before he realized it.

The victim said the vehicle was unlocked and that the key fob for the “push to start” system “may’ve fallen out of his pocket” when he got out. He also said that because he could start the vehicle with his phone, he did not think about the key being missing from his pocket.

While deputies investigated, the victim used GPS tracking to provide live updates on the vehicle’s location. The first reported location was on Maryland Route 5 southbound before Burch Hill Road in Prince George’s County. As the investigation continued, the vehicle was later tracked in the area of Point Lookout Road and Loveville Road in Loveville.

A deputy located the stolen vehicle in the area of Point Lookout Road and Hollywood Road in Leonardtown. After confirming it was the same vehicle, the deputy began following it. Authorities said the vehicle then began making evasive maneuvers and did not stop for the deputy’s activated emergency equipment.

The vehicle fled south on Point Lookout Road at a high rate of speed before turning onto Hanover Drive, where it stopped in the front yard of a residence. Deputies said all four occupants fled on foot while the vehicle was still in motion.

A short time later, investigators spoke with a witness in the neighborhood who provided Ring video footage showing four people running through his yard.

The witness initially described four black males. The video showed one wearing a red hoodie, blue jeans and white shoes; one wearing a black hoodie, black pants and black shoes; one wearing a blue hoodie, black pants and black shoes; and one wearing a white shirt, jeans and shoes of an unknown color.

Deputies said two juveniles were located in a wooded area near Hanover Beach Lane. Multiple police units continued searching for the two remaining suspects, using Maryland State Police Trooper 2, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office drone unit, and information from residents in the area. After a search that lasted about three hours, the other two suspects were not found.

Investigators later spoke with the victim again at the scene where the suspects fled. The victim reported several items stolen from inside the vehicle, including a DJI Mavic Pro drone valued at $2,600, a DJI Neo drone valued at $800, Beats Studio Pro headphones valued at $229, a ladder rack valued at $450, a Werner 28-foot extension ladder valued at $580, a carbon fiber Ridge wallet valued at $90, multiple credit and debit cards, and a Maryland driver’s license valued at $20.

At about 3:19 p.m., a caller from Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown contacted the communications center and reported that a blue Toyota Camry with an unknown tag had gone down his driveway and picked up two males matching the description of the outstanding suspects. The vehicle then left the area southbound on Point Lookout Road. Investigators noted that the address backed up to a wooded area near where the earlier incident occurred.

Deputies later located the blue 2023 Toyota Camry near Point Lookout Road and Mom and Pop Lane in Callaway and conducted a traffic stop. The occupants were removed and detained during the investigation. Authorities said the two male occupants removed from the Camry were identified as the two outstanding suspects.

Carey was identified as one of them. Investigators said his identity was confirmed through a photograph from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. At the time of his arrest, Carey was wearing a white cutoff shirt, but investigators said the shirt contained small pieces of red lint, which they said was consistent with the red jacket seen in the Ring video footage. Carey was also allegedly wearing the same light-colored pants seen in the video. Authorities said both suspects’ clothing was extremely dirty and muddy, consistent with walking through wooded areas.

Carey was taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he was interviewed. Investigators said Carey acknowledged that he made the “wrong choice” and said he “should’ve been the bigger person.” He also allegedly said he noticed officers as the vehicle was traveling through Leonardtown.

Authorities said Carey posed a significant flight risk because he allegedly fled from the stolen vehicle, ran through the woods, and was only arrested after being picked up in another vehicle leaving the area. Deputies also said Carey and the others fled the stolen vehicle so quickly that they did not put it in park, allowing it to roll down a residential street before stopping in a front yard.

6/8/2026: On Saturday, June 6, 2026, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. The victim reported that his 2025 Ford Bronco had been stolen from his residence in Lexington Park.

Based on GPS tracking data, the vehicle was determined to be in the Loveville area. Deputies later located the Bronco operating near Point Lookout Road and Hollywood Road in Leonardtown and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled southbound on Point Lookout Road at a high rate of speed.

Deputies pursued the vehicle to the 22000 block of Hanover Drive, where four occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

The Bronco was recovered, and no injuries were reported.

With assistance from witnesses, deputies located and arrested two juveniles in a nearby wooded area.

As deputies continued searching the area, a 911 caller reported that a blue Toyota Camry had picked up two individuals matching the descriptions of the outstanding suspects near where the stolen vehicle had been abandoned.

Deputies located the Camry and, following an investigation, determined that two of its occupants were the remaining suspects who fled from the Bronco. One suspect was identified as Deshawn Anthony Carey, 18, of Lexington Park. The second suspect was identified as a juvenile.

Carey was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center and charged with 11 criminal offenses, including unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, theft of property valued at $25,000 or more but less than $100,000, theft of at least $1500 but less than $25,000, four counts of theft of at least $100 but less than $1500, two counts of theft of less than $100, theft of a credit card and willful and malicious destruction of property.

The three juveniles were referred to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Due to legal protections, juveniles are not publicly identified by law enforcement agencies.

The stolen vehicle was recovered, and no injuries were reported.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office thanks the citizen witnesses whose observations and information were instrumental in advancing this investigation.

6/6/2026: On Saturday, June 6, 2026, police in St. Mary’s County responded to a stolen vehicle involving a Ford Bronco SUV.

Around 12 p.m., the suspects were located and began fleeing from police.

The suspects traveled down Point Lookout Road before turning onto Hanover Drive where they crashed at the dead end residential street before fleeing on foot into the nearby wooded area.

Troopers from the Maryland State Leonardtown Barrack, Aviation Command Trooper 7, and Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and K9 units responded to assist.

While responding to the scene to assist in a track, a vehicle pulled out infront of a Calvert County Sheriff’s K9 Officer while he was responding code, with lights and sirens activated.

The deputy was able to avoid striking the vehicle before traveling off the roadway, striking a utility box, utility pole and road sign.

All K9’s are reportedly okay and not injured.

The 36-year-old adult male deputy was transported to the St. Mary’s County Regional Airport to meet Trooper 2 who transported the patient to an area trauma center.

No suspects are currently known to be in custody at this time.

Updates will be provided when they become available.
