Lamont Anthony Campbell, 52, of Temple Hills, has been charged with theft of property valued between $100 and $1,500 after authorities say he failed to pay for several items at a Sam’s Club in Waldorf on June 7, 2026. The charge is a misdemeanor.
According to charging documents, an officer with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 1:05 p.m. to the Sam’s Club on Crain Highway in Waldorf for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Store asset protection staff told the officer they had been watching Campbell while he used a self-checkout lane. The employee reported that Campbell scanned only some of the items in his cart while leaving other items unscanned, then passed all points of sale and attempted to leave the store.
The store employee stopped Campbell before he left and asked him to go to the back office, but Campbell declined, according to the officer’s account. A manager was then called to help verify which items had not been paid for. The report states Campbell did not deny failing to pay for the items.
While store staff reviewed the items, Campbell allegedly told the officer “that he didn’t mean to steal the items,” saying “he was just very busy with his new born child and forgot to pay for the rest of the items.” He also said he “did not know that it is considered stealing if you didn’t leave the store,” according to the report.
Store staff calculated the unpaid merchandise at $448.58. Items listed in the report included crab cakes valued at $16.98, beef fajitas valued at $17.93, shrimp tempura valued at $16.94 and lobster bisque valued at $10.48. Campbell was also barred from returning to the store indefinitely, according to the report.
Campbell was arrested and taken to the Charles County Detention Center without further incident. He initially was ordered held without bond on June 7, 2026. At a bail review hearing the next day, bond was set at $10,000 and later posted. A trial is scheduled for July 22, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
