UPDATE: Police Investigating Head-On Minibike Collision That Left 16-Year-Old in Serious Condition, 19-Year-Old Dead

UPDATE 6/16/2026 @ 12:30 p.m.: On Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 11:21 p.m., Troopers from Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack along with deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to Maryland Route 224 (Riverside Rd) in the area of Wilson Landing Road for a report of a serious motor vehicle collision. Due to the circumstances, TFC A. Sabock, Advanced Collision Investigator (ACI) responded to assume the investigation.

A preliminary investigation conducted by Troopers indicates a 2021 minibike operated by a 16-year-old male, of Nanjemoy, was traveling southbound on Maryland Route 224 in the area of Wilson Landing Road. The 2021 minibike collided head on with a 2018 minibike operated by James Thomas Claggett (19 yoa) of Nanjemoy.

The 16-year-old was flown by MSPAC helicopter Trooper 7 to Capital Region Hospital in serious condition. Mr. Claggett was flown by MSPAC helicopter Trooper 2 to MEDSTAR/Washington Hospital Center and was later pronounced deceased.

Both operators were not wearing helmets at the time of the collision. The minibikes were unregistered and did not have headlamps for proper roadway illumination and vehicle identification.

6/16/2026: On Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 11:17 p.m., police, firefighters and emergency medical services responded to the area of 9000 Riverside Road in Nanjemoy, for the serious motor vehicle collision involving two motorcycles.

Callers reported a “gruesome” crash with one subject laying in the roadway and not moving.

Crews quickly arrived on the scene to find two motorcycles involved in a head-on style collision and requested two helicopters to land nearby due to the victims suffering serious injuries.

Maryland State Police Aviation Command Troopers 2 and Trooper 7 landed nearby.

Trooper 2 transported an unknown aged adult male to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center with life-threatening injuries.

Trooper 7 reported to be transporting a 13-year-old male who suffered serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Updates will be provided when they become available.
