Barbara Elaine Lewis, 74, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on June 27, 2026. Barbara was born on April 27, 1952, in Washington, DC, to the late Robert and Frances Dempsey.

For more than 28 years, Barbara served as an HBC manager at Giant Food, and she truly enjoyed her work. She was known for her dedication, warmth, and the genuine care she showed not only to her colleagues but also to every customer she encountered.

Barbara was blessed with one daughter, Vicki Debeltz (David), of Mechanicsville, MD. Through her marriage to the late Elmer “Elmo” Lewis, Jr., she also gained four bonus children, including William “Billy” Lewis from Chesapeake Beach, MD; James “Jimmy” Lewis of Bryans Road, MD; Shari Void from Arlington, VA; and the late Robert “Bobby” Lewis.

Barbara enjoyed bowling for many years. She loved traveling, shopping trips with her daughter, and cheering on the Washington Commanders and the Baltimore Orioles.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, cherished husband, son, and siblings: Thomas Dempsey, Louis Dempsey, Sr., Allen Dempsey, Frances Ferrell, and Dinah Dempsey. She is survived by her children and siblings: Robert Dempsey, Jr., Arthur Dempsey, Debora Swarthout, and Elsie Brock. Additionally, she leaves behind grandchildren: James Lewis, Jr., Jessica Lewis, Desiree Granada, Jordan Adams, Jasmine Adams, and Robert Adams, along with five great-grandchildren and her godson, Derrick Dempsey, and several nieces and nephews.

On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the family will welcome friends for visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Chuck Conrad of Fellowship Baptist Church. Interment will take place at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
