Alyssa Renee Coontz, 28, of Prince Frederick, and Terrell Devantee Atkins, 28, of California
Alyssa Renee Coontz, 28, of Prince Frederick, has been charged with obstructing and hindering and resisting or interfering with arrest after Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies said she interfered while deputies were taking Terrell Devantee Atkins, 28, of California, into custody on June 30, 2026, in Prince Frederick.
According to the allegations, a deputy with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office was at Fairground Road in Prince Frederick around 9:30 p.m. when he made contact with Atkins, who was wanted through St. Mary’s County on a bench warrant for failing to appear in a driving-without-a-license case. The warrant was confirmed, and Atkins was placed under arrest.
While deputies were placing Atkins in custody, he asked to say goodbye to his girlfriend, identified as Coontz. The deputy wrote that he allowed the goodbye, and Coontz wrapped her arms around Atkins. After about 40 seconds of hugging and kissing, the deputy said he told Coontz “it was time for her to stop” so Atkins could be taken to the Calvert County Detention Center.
The deputy reported that he told Coontz multiple times “to stop hugging Atkins,” but said she refused. He then told her to “let go” or she would be placed under arrest. Deputies alleged Coontz continued holding onto Atkins, preventing the deputy from taking custody and transporting him.
Deputies said Coontz had to be physically separated from Atkins. As another deputy attempted to place her under arrest, Coontz allegedly pulled away, turned, and began running on foot. Deputies said the brief foot chase lasted about 30 yards before two deputies tackled her to the ground.
Coontz stopped resisting once she was on the ground and was taken into custody, according to the report. Two deputies and Coontz sustained minor scratches during the apprehension, and all declined medical treatment. The deputy also noted that his body-worn camera was active during the incident.
Coontz was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and later released on personal recognizance. Her listed release conditions include not engaging in criminal conduct and appearing in court when required. She waived an attorney for her initial appearance, and a trial is scheduled for Aug. 20, 2026, at Calvert District Court.
