UPDATE: Speed and Alcohol Factors in Serious Head-on Collision in Valley Lee

UPDATE 7/11/2026: On Friday, July 10, 2026, at approximately 3:55 p.m., police, firefighters and emergency medical services were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of Piney Point Road and Drayden Road.

Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in a head-on collision, with two individuals trapped and one unconscious.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 white Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Robert Lumpkins, 38, of Leonardtown, was traveling northbound on Piney Point Road when it crossed the center line and continued traveling on the southbound shoulder.

The Silverado attempted to re-enter the roadway and struck a 2021 Ford F-250 operated by Nicholas Puchetti, 63, of Piney Point, which was traveling southbound on Piney Point Road.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was transported by Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 to an area trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Ford F-250 were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

All individuals involved are currently listed as stable.

Preliminary indications suggest that speed and alcohol were factors in the collision.

Due to the severity of the crash, the SMCSO Collision Reconstruction Unit responded and assumed the investigation.

7/10/2026: On Friday, July 10, 2026, at approximately 3:58 p.m., police, firefighters and emergency medical services responded to the area of Piney Point Road and Drayden Road in Valley Lee, for the serious motor vehicle collision with entrapment and one vehicle possibly on fire.

Crews from Second District, Bay District, Ridge, Hollywood, and Leonardtown were dispatched to the scene with first arriving units reporting a two-vehicle head on style collision with one trapped and four patients for evaluation.

A helicopter was requested to land at the scene due to the operator suffering life-threatening injuries. SMECO was requested to the scene for one utility pole being broken.

Firefighters from Second District and Bay District extricated the trapped patient in under 20 minutes.

Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 landed at the scene and transported an adult male to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center with life-threatening injuries.

One additional patient was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center. A second patient was transported to an area hospital.

Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the collision. Piney Point Road will remain closed for Reconstruction. Drayden Road is being utilized as the detour route.

Use caution in the area and expect extended delays.
