Selma Ann Scruggs, 63, of Morganza, MD, passed away on June 22, 2026, at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio.
Selma was born on November 3, 1962, in Leonardtown, MD, and entered her eternal rest with her husband by her side. She was the beloved daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Holt and Joseph Butler.
Selma married Ronald L. Scruggs on February 28, 1990, in Leonardtown, MD—the love of her life for 36 beautiful years. She loved to travel, enjoyed cooking, and cherished every moment spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Whenever Selma came back home to Maryland, she made sure to call her family and say, “I’m on my way—we’re on the turnpike,” ready for her fried chicken and potato salad. Her husband could always be heard in the background saying, “You know what I want—fix me some of my country burgers.” She loved visiting, reminiscing about the good old days, and sharing laughter with everyone around her.
Selma enjoyed watching one of her favorite shows, I Love Lucy. She loved music—especially I’ll Take You There by The Staple Singers—and she loved to dance. She called her sisters every day, and her joyful spirit made her a delight to be around. Selma loved people, loved to laugh, and loved deeply.
She took great pride in her work. She began her career at B&B Maintenance in Southern Maryland, and after moving to Cleveland, she worked for years as a deli manager and in several restaurants throughout the city.
Selma was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah E. Holt of Morganza, MD; her father, Joseph Butler of Mechanicsville, MD; her sister, Sylvia Marshall; her step-grandson, Zion Scruggs Banks; her stepson, Ronald L. Scruggs; her nephews Jason Estep and James Holt Jr.; and her stepdaughter, Cynthia Bailey.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald Scruggs of Cleveland, Ohio; her stepchildren Kenya, Kimberly, Anthony, Terry, and Claudell Scruggs; her sisters Sheena Holt of Hollywood, MD, and Selina Holt-Jackson (William) of Mechanicsville, MD; her brothers Jerome Holt of Lexington Park, MD, and James Holt (Andre) of Harrisburg, PA; her Aunt Evangeline Holt; her Uncle David Holt; nieces Nickey Holt, Davida Estep, Alisha Marshall, Leticia Reed, Mashauna Holt, Kennedy Holt, and Kelvina Holt; nephews Rodney Estep, Samuel Briscoe, Marvin Briscoe, Damon Estep, Christian Holt, and Joshua Holt; and a host of extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
