Tyrone Robert Thompson, 44, of Park Hall, faces charges of theft of less than $100, possession of a firearm after a disqualifying conviction and transporting a loaded handgun in a vehicle following his July 3, 2026, arrest in Charles County.
A Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to the Dash In on Crain Highway on July 3 after employees reported an armed robbery. Staff described the person involved as a Black man wearing a black jacket, black pants, a ski mask and black-and-gray gloves. They said he left the area on a black moped.
A store manager showed the deputy surveillance footage of the incident. Employees reported that the man placed two cans of Coke in his pockets and picked up two bags of chips. He put the chips and one can of Coke on the counter.
When a cashier asked him to remove the second can from his pocket, the man allegedly responded, “I have gun,” before leaving without paying for the Coke. Employees said no firearm was displayed, but they took the statement seriously and called 911. The alleged theft involved merchandise valued at less than $100.
Another deputy later located a man matching the description standing beside a black moped at the Super 8 Motel. The investigating deputy said the man, later identified as Thompson, matched the person shown in the store’s surveillance video.
Deputies arrested Thompson on suspicion of theft. During a search, they found a black Nike ski mask and clothing matching what was visible in the footage. Black-and-gray gloves were reportedly recovered from a storage compartment beneath the moped’s seat.
Investigators also found a black T-shirt wrapped around a heavy metal object inside the moped, according to the allegations. When the shirt was unwrapped, deputies reported finding a loaded Glock 23 .40-caliber handgun.
Police said Thompson initially identified himself with a false name and date of birth. After receiving a reading of his rights, he agreed to answer questions, according to the deputy.
Thompson allegedly acknowledged going to the Dash In but denied stealing anything. He said he told employees he was going to retrieve his debit card and return to pay, although deputies reported that no debit card was found.
He also told investigators he purchased the moped from someone he knew as “Trey” in the October Place area of Waldorf and said the handgun came with the moped. Thompson denied telling store employees that he had a gun.
During transportation to the Charles County Detention Center, a deputy questioned the birth date Thompson had provided. Police said Thompson then acknowledged giving a false name and identified himself as Tyrone Robert Thompson.
A records check reportedly showed a prior warning indicating Thompson could be armed. Investigators also said that he is prohibited from possessing a firearm because of an armed robbery conviction dated September 26, 2005.
During intake screening at the detention center, authorities reported finding a small ball of aluminum foil containing marijuana in Thompson’s pants pocket. The substance was collected for destruction. No marijuana-related charge was listed in the available case information.
Thompson appeared before a judicial officer on July 3 and waived an attorney for that initial proceeding. He requested a preliminary hearing and was ordered held without bond. A bail review was held July 6, and the no-bond order remained in place. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 31, 2026, at 9 a.m. in Charles County District Court.
