MISSING: Bonnie The Emu Is On The Run in Calvert County

July 24, 2026

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office released the following information this afternoon.

Well… this isn’t the kind of fugitive we expected today! Bonnie, a 6-foot-tall, approximately 200-pound emu, has decided she’d rather explore northern Calvert County than stay home. She has recently been spotted in the Owings and Chesapeake Beach areas.

If you happen to see Bonnie, please admire her from a safe distance and DO NOT approach her. While she may look curious (and photogenic), an emu’s kick can cause serious injury.

Our Animal Control Officers are working to safely bring Bonnie home. If she’s spotted near a fenced backyard or enclosed area, they’ll attempt to gently contain her using temporary fencing… and a few well-placed snacks.

If you see Bonnie:

🦤 Do not chase her or try to catch her.

🚗 If you’re driving, use caution if she’s near the roadway.

🐕 Keep pets, especially dogs, well away from her

📞 Call Calvert County Animal Control immediately at 410-535-1600 ext. 2526 with her location.

Please give responding personnel plenty of room to work and help us avoid spooking our feathered friend. Let’s get Bonnie safely back where she belongs! If you had “loose emu” on your Calvert County bingo card today… congratulations!
